Chandra Otterson

M.A.

Hello, my name is Chandra Otterson and I am so glad you are here and are taking the first step towards seeking counselling services. I understand how hard it can be to reach out to a new therapist. I want you to feel as comfortable as possible as you begin your journey towards making change. I look forward to meeting with you and helping you on your path to improved mental well-being.

I am a registered provisional psychologist with a B.A. in Psychology from the University of Saskatchewan and a M.A. in Counselling Psychology from City University of Seattle. I work with adults, children, youth and families. I provide a non-judgmental, welcoming space where clients are able to safely explore their emotions and experiences. In our sessions I want you to feel that you can be completely yourself. I believe that healing is most likely to occur when there is safety and connection in the therapeutic relationship between client and therapist.

My theoretical orientation incorporates evidence-based practices such as Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT),and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) along with techniques from both Solution Focused Therapy and Narrative Therapy. I use a client-centered approach and believe that every individual is on their own journey and that they are the experts of their own life. I provide warmth and compassion in my work with you as a client as we collaborate on working to achieve your goals. I consider it a privilege to be able to work with you on your path towards improved mental health and towards living the life that you desire.

I am passionate about working with children, youth, and families and in providing a space for young people to feel heard and valued in the therapeutic relationship. I work with parents to help them better understand their children’s needs and I provide support to parents in making changes to improve communication and connection in their relationship with their child. I have worked in partnership with schools for several years and have been involved in consultation with schools in an advocacy role to help educators better understand my clients’ needs. I have a strong understanding of ADHD and Learning Disabilities as well as other disabilities, and I have broad experience with common issues such as stress, anxiety and depression.

I understand the experience of parenting as I am a parent of two teenagers who are finding their way towards adulthood. For the past few years, I have spent time volunteering in their schools and coaching them in their sporting adventures. I am a strong proponent of mental health in sport and I am interested in helping coaches develop a team culture that is inclusive and encourages athletes to continue in youth sport.
